Written By: J.K. Rowling“Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it.” ― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Harry Potter is one of the best series I've ever read and one for the ages. No other story that I've read has compared to it and it is an inspiration to every young author. The character of Harry Potter was someone that we could all relate to and so unique. The way that Rowling presented him to us is brilliant. We all dreaded the day that it had to come to and end. Even though she is no longer writing them, it will always be remembered as the greatest series ever written. Rowling has readers all waiting for her next series and dreaming about Harry Potter. We all wonder what would happen next if she was to write another one. The last book actually had me in tears because it was so well written. This month we are shining the spotlight on J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter Series for one for the ages. It is no doubt the greatest of all time and we will forever cherish it. Craigmont's Well-Read Chiefs' welcomes author Shelia Lipsey. On Thursday, February 13, 2014, Craigmont High's Well-Read Chiefs' welcomed author Shelia Lipsey to tell us about her most recent novel House of Cars. Shelia Lipsey is the author of 16 novels and claims that writing is what she does and who she is. She is a very inspiring person. At the age of two, Lipsey was diagnosed with polio, which caused her to be isolated from family and to grow up in hospitals. It was very difficult, for her, in school because she was the only one physically handicapped and there was constant adversity. She was teased because of polio, which cause her to have a low self-esteem. Though she had a disease, Lipsey was very outgoing and popular. She tells us that, “There are plenty of challenges in life and they can damage us.” Throughout her life of struggle and desire to do what everyone else could do, Lipsey had a passion. She loved to read and write. She believed that when she read, she could go to places she couldn’t go and could escape taunts and experience something new every book that she read. She found comfort and jubilation in the words written and read. Lipsey did not plan to be an author because it wasn’t one of her aspirations. She even worked in corporate America, but there was always “something missing”. As her life progressed, she continued to write. Tragedy struck Ms. Lipsey in 1997 when her fiancé was brutally murdered. It made her realize her true desire. After his death, she began journaling and journaling. She knew then that she wanted to be an author even though she had always enjoyed writing since her days as a child. She began writing her first book, Always Now and Forever. It was not published by a big company but Lipsey did not give up. If no one would help her, she would help herself. Her first book was self-published. Lipsey continued writing and finally Into each life was created. It was the jump start for her career. Now today Lipsey stands tall, a fierce woman who is an inspiration. The entire audience was able to engage in her story. Her motto is, live your dreams now!” She urged her audience to play on what they have and to take advantage of their talent. Her current inspiration is her sons and she is now a member of the Buanita and Hodges publishing company. She signs authors and help them to reach their goals. Her only works to adolescents who want to be an author is, “You Have to write!” House of Cars is her first young adult novel and the first book in the Fairly High School series. Monster is truly a great book and should be sat on a shelf with the best of books. It is one of my favorite books, and I read it once every year. Every time I read it I understand more and my opinion changes and I constantly wonder: Is he really a monster? This book allows the reader to make that decision and experience reality through a book. I suggest that every book club reads this book and live Steve's experience with him. Moment in the novel you'll question your perspective and the question (Did he do It?) will repeatedly dwell in your mind.
October's Book Of The MonthAlmost Alice by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor was an interesting book. It is very real and true, and I can deeper understand the situations that teenage girls face today. I would have never imagined some of their problems. These are topics that are very important to young women and I know that they will enjoy.
Alice is a great friend and " a shoulder to lean on" especially in tough situations. Never before have I read about someone that is as loyal, caring, and supporting as Alice, to her best friends. Others are always on her mind. In Almost Alice, Alice learns more about herself and tries to further understand herself and life. She also explores the depth of her relationships with her best friend Pamela and Elizabeth. She then wonders if her friends are as good to her as she is to them. Sometimes she is jealous and questions their actions, but in the end finds out that her friends really need her. Alice is brave, honest, loyal, and supporting. Alice is a shoulder that her friends can always lean on especially when problems occur. Reflections in art on Thirteen Reasons Why by Akira Loyd.
